The House is on Fire

August 15, 2023

Architecture is a series of slow, intentional, detail-oriented acts that often culminate in the equally slow methodical process of construction. Our work can be destroyed in minutes by fire, flood, storm. We see our buildings as not nature, we design them to work against the necessary cycles of nature, pushing development further into functioning ecosystems; using design strategies to conceptually separate us from the non-human world. The contemporary life cycle of a building needs to include crisis response in it’s very structure, and architects need to learn more about the mechanics of destruction to better respond to crises.
